Calc. Sheet 1: Local Stress Calculation

In order to calculate the local stresses which are introduced in the related technical papers, find how sensitive the local stresses are to design parameters of attachments and finally calculate safety factors in discontinuity area, this calculating sheet has been developed. Briefly, it includes the following parts:

  • Local stresses calculators for trunnion and three types of structural profile attachment

  • Local stress calculator for saddle supports and bare supported pipes

  • Interactive graphs which demonstrate local stress sensitivity to design parameters of the attachments. Also it includes distributed circumferential moment and local stress for a bare supported pipe

  • Combined stress calculator which calculates safety factors in each required stress categories presented by ASME BPVC Sec VIII, Div 2-2010.

Using and downloading the calculating sheet, you agree to all notes on the sheet as well as disclaimers.

Calculation Sheets

This section consists of some calculation sheets to illustrate some results from the methods which are explained in the technical papers part. The presented calculations give users an opinion about the application of formulas, criteria, assumptions and limitations on which some common engineering methods or codes are based on. Besides, some designed graphs help users to compare the introduced methods with each other. It may demonstrate a sensitivity of a system to a design parameter. These calculators are not designed for a professional engineering practice but they should be considered as a tool for showing the method’s efficiency or applicability. For an engineering practice, users should refer to comprehensive references, codes and standards. Using all parts of this site, you agree to the notes and disclaimers which are mentioned on the calculation sheets and Terms and Conditions respectively.

Calc. Sheet 2: FRP Pipes Stress Calculation

In order to evaluate some of the parameters which are not calculated in common piping stress analysis software such as CAESAR II, this calculating sheet has been developed. Briefly, it includes the following parts:

  • External collapse pressure

  • Longitudinal compressive load and resulting stresses based on applied external axial load

  • Longitudinal compressive load and resulting stresses for a pipe within two anchors and subjected temperature changes.

  • Interactive graphs which demonstrate the stress caused by axial forces and the effects of design parameters such as pipe span and temperature change on the results.

  • Local hoop, axial and shear stresses due to saddle supporting

  • Interactive graphs which demonstrate local stress sensitivity to design parameters such as saddle angle and pipe span.

Calc. Sheet 3: Buried Pipe Calculator

Buried Pipe Calculator (excel application) has been designed as a training tool to help users to calculate stress and strain requirements and their corresponding criteria for both restrained and unrestrained sections of a buried pipe. It should be noted this application is a training tool and must not be substituted for a finite element software. For analyzing of an unrestrained part of a buried pipe, soil-pipe interactions should be used to reach a valid pipe deformation and stress. So for that part user is asked to bring the longitudinal expansion stress to this sheet manually. The following parameters can be calculated by the application:

  • Circumferential Hoop Stress due to internal and external stress

  • Longitudinal Expansion Stress

  • Longitudinal Sustained Stress

  • Longitudinal Occasional and Sustained Stress

  • Combined Stress (for restrained system only)

  • Effective Stress at Road

  • Elastic Stability Analysis under external loads

  • Local Shell Buckling due to anchor force in restrained system

  • Circumferential Through-wall Bending Stress

  • Ring Buckling Analysis resulting from external pressure

  • Ovality resulting from external pressure

Chart section of this application enables user to see the behavior of each mentioned parameters (with their criteria if desired) on one chart. They can be appeared by different colors on one chart in user’s selection versus pipe thickness.

Report section provide users with input and outputs (results) of analysis in ax excel sheet.
