GRP Pipe Modeling

The modeling instruction, in this part, covers the following subject:

  • Modeling of FRP pipes in CAESAR II based on ISO 14692, BS 7159, UKOOA

  • Selection the input data based on FRP manufacturer

  • Interpretation of different loading conditions and their effects on stress analysis

  • Evaluation of local stresses and buckling effects based on presented calculation sheets.

  • Modeling the underground FRP pipes and evaluation the pipe soil interaction

  • Calculation the strength and integrity of underground FRP pipe joints and the necessity of using thrust blocks.

Buried Pipe Modeling

The modeling instruction, in this part, covers the following subject:

  • Modeling of underground pipes in CAESAR II and evaluation the pipe soil interaction.

  • Evaluation of bends behavior in a buried pipeline (Min. bend radius calculation)

  • Strength and integrity calculation of underground pipe joints and the necessity of using thrust blocks.

  • Evaluation of virtual anchor length and calculation the anchor block force.

  • Effect of external loads such as vertical dead or live loads on designing of buried pipes by using the presented calculation sheet.

This section consists of examples which are based on presented subjects in the technical paper. In this part, some methods and challenges in computer modeling of piping are illustrated by using some training pictures. Moreover, due to the fact that there is no possibility to evaluate some special stress problems by beam-element-based software, such as calculation of local stresses or assessment of buckling effects, the presented calculation sheets could be useful as guidance for informed engineers who are familiar with the basis and limitation of those methods. The results have been discussed by means of interactive graphs which demonstrate the effects of design conditions and assumptions.
